Definition of Primary Gifted Program:
Primary students needing enrichment or differentiated instruction demonstrate outstanding intellectual ability, reasoning ability, and creative thinking. To qualify for differentiated instruction in the gifted program, students must meet criteria established by R-7.

A.I.M. Mission:
Our mission is to create and provide challenging opportunities for the Lee’s Summit’s identified gifted students in primary grades.

A.I.M. Beliefs:

We believe:
- primary gifted students need opportunities to interact with their intellectual peers.
- primary gifted students need an emotionally nurturing environment that encourages creative and flexible thinking and risk-taking.
- primary gifted students need opportunities to develop higher order thinking skills, challenging activities, and authentic learning experiences as components of their curriculum.
- primary gifted students need support and guidance to recognize, accept, enhance, and apply their gifts and talents.
- parent and staff education and communication are important components of the A.I.M. program.

Frequently Asked Questions

 

Q:What is the Primary Gifted Program?
A: It is differentiated instruction for students in kindergarten through third grade who demonstrate outstanding intellectual ability, reasoning ability, and creative thinking.

Q: How many students will qualify?
A: The top 2% of students in the district will qualify based on the set criteria.

Q: What type of tests will be administered?
A: Gifted assessment: IQ test, reasoning tests, and checklists will be used.

Q: When will we know if our child qualified for gifted services?
A: Families will receive notification by mail when screening and/or evaluation in the primary grades is complete.

Q: When can non-qualifying students be retested?
A: The NWEA is given to students in the fourth grade.  At that time, those scores will indicate screening for the A.S.P.I.R.E. Program (4,5,6 gifted).

Q: When students move within R-7, will they be retested?
A: No

Q: If my child does not qualify for A.I.M., what resources are available to me?
A: The teacher of gifted students and the regular classroom teacher in each building can provide you with ideas for working with your child's strengths.

Q: What will gifted services look like?
A: The delivery model will be a pull out class with gifted peers approximately 2.5 hours per week.

Q: Are A.I.M. students required to make up missed classroom work?
A: Students are required to master the concept/skill presented in their absence, and to make up work that is taken for a grade or a test.

Q: Do A.I.M. students automatically qualify for A.S.P.I.R.E.?
A: Yes
